For decades security camera systems have been used by governments

, businesses and other institutions to keep an eye on people and vehicles around anywhere from hallways to streets. Whether it’s a parking ticket camera, a perimeter monitor or a red-light camera, we’re all familiar with those eyes-in-the-skies. Upon detection of suspicious behavior by a surveillance camera, police or security personnel can immediately take appropriate action and the footage is also recorded in most cases.

Once the domain of corporate, military and state, security camera systems are now ubiquitous in private family homes. From the comfort and safety of the inside of your house, you can view anything going on outside as long as it’s covered within the field of vision of an outdoor camera. As its name implies, a CCTV system will transmit any video data to attached to its “circuit”, which of course includes a visual display. If you happen to catch a glimpse of any suspicious of malicious activity going on near your home, you can quickly contact law enforcement and solve the problem without any harm coming to you.

A video monitoring system basically consists of one or more streaming video cameras and either a recording device, a real-time visual output device or both. It doesn’t have to end there though, and you can also integrate it with an audible alarm that possibly automatically alerts security or activates locks. You can even set it up so that the system only starts capturing and storing footage if an alarm goes off and continue to do so until you shut off the alarm.

The early camera surveillance systems used by governments and other large organizations were cumbersome and costly. Today, even the average household or your local milk shop can afford one thanks to the prices of electronics having begun to fall rapidly around the beginning of the 21st century.

Also thanks to said technology, you don’t even have to be near the video monitoring system to view it – you can now view recorded and live footage from anywhere around the world by using the power of the internet. Whether it’s valuables, your family, your office, your workers or your vacation home, anything can be monitored literally from another continent over the internet.

The actual cameras themselves have advanced a lot too, with many featuring automatic motion detection, motion-activated recording and adaptation to low-light through infra-red lighting and capturing capabilities. Cameras can also be physically controlled remotely to rotate them, in addition to the common ability to zoom into a target.

Recording ability has also improved. No longer is video recorded using cumbersome, low-quality and low-capacity tapes – nowadays it is recorded straight to flash memory or a hard disk drive. Of course, such reliably saved digital data is invaluable as evidence in cases of crime or other legal matters. There are many examples of crimes being solved that otherwise would have taken longer to solve or may not have been solved at all without footage that helped with investigations. The presence of a conspicuous camera and a sign alerting people to it can also discourage criminals. There is a reason banks and casinos are filled with these devices.

Unfortunately, many of these discouraged criminals turn to “black-spots” where there is no surveillance, so we should always remain vigilant about crime wherever we are.

For a competition that has always held holidays as sacrosanct, Serie A is taking a big break from tradition this week.

Following the successful example of the English Premier League, the Italian league will play Serie A and Italian Cup matches over four of the next five days.

"The concept is simple. Professional soccer is an entertainment product and offering it during the holiday period is a great opportunity for those in charge," AS Roma general manager Mauro Baldissoni said.

"The Premier League has shown that it works to offer this product during the holidays — both in terms of stadium attendance and international TV viewership."

The opening two matches of the week will be held in the country's two biggest stadiums: Lazio hosts Fiorentina in Rome's Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday in the Italian Cup quarterfinals, then it's a Milan derby at the San Siro in another quarterfinal a day later.

On Friday, in Serie A, league leader Napoli visits Crotone. On Saturday, there's a slate of nine league matches, beginning at 12:30pm local time with Fiorentina vs AC Milan, and concluding with evening matches featuring Inter Milan hosting Lazio and Juventus visiting Hellas Verona.

More Cup matches are scheduled for January 2 and 3, then Serie A again on January 5 and 6.

Veteran coach Fabio Capello believes the scheduling is already problematic because of too many night matches — starting with the week's first game, Lazio-Fiorentina, at 9pm local time.

"It's too late," Capello told Italian daily La Repubblica. "That means leaving the stadium at midnight in the cold with many people having to work the next day. If you're going to play on a holiday, you've got to start earlier and help the fans out."

In the past, Serie A's winter break began before Christmas and lasted until after January 6, which is Epiphany, a major Catholic feast day and the end of the holiday period in Italy.

This season, the break will be from January 7-20.

"It doesn't change much for the players," Baldissoni said. "They'll still have a break in January."

Still, the Italian schedule has not gone quite as far as the EPL, which has no break at all and games on December 26, 27, 28, 30 and 31, plus January 1, 2, 3 and 4 — meaning teams will play three matches in little more than a week.
